Sakura season is the single most in-demand time to visit Kyoto, and also the hardest to plan far in advance — the blossom itself moves on a schedule that shifts noticeably from year to year, not a fixed date on the calendar.
When it typically happens
Kyoto's cherry blossoms have historically opened in late March to early April, with full bloom (mankai) usually following seven to ten days after the first flowers, and the season closing out with falling petals (hanafubuki) a week or so after that. That said, timing has been trending earlier in recent years and varies by several days year to year — treat any specific date as a rough historical average, not a booking guarantee.
Where to see it in Kyoto
- Philosopher's Path — a canal-side walking path in northern Higashiyama lined with hundreds of cherry trees, at its best in the early morning before the crowds.
- Maruyama Park — centred on a large weeping cherry tree, and the epicentre of Kyoto's hanami (blossom-viewing picnic) culture, lit up at night.
- Arashiyama — blossoms along the river and hillside, combinable with the bamboo grove and Togetsukyō Bridge.
- Kamo River banks — a long, less crowded stretch through the city centre, good for a quieter walk.
Hanami etiquette
Picnicking under the blossoms is a genuine local tradition, not just a tourist activity — join in respectfully: bring your own mat and rubbish bags (public bins are scarce), keep noise reasonable, and don't shake branches or pick blossoms for photos.
Managing the crowds
Peak bloom weekends are Kyoto at its busiest all year, on top of an already busy city. Early morning visits, weekday timing, and having a backup spot in mind if your first choice is packed all help — the difference between 7am and 11am at Maruyama Park in peak bloom is dramatic.
