Kyoto's temple-and-garden reputation got a genuinely modern counterpoint in October 2025 with the opening of teamLab Biovortex Kyoto, the digital art collective's largest permanent museum in Japan. It's a legitimate addition to a Kyoto itinerary rather than a gimmick, and its location makes it easy to fit in without reshuffling the rest of a trip.
What it is
teamLab is the Tokyo-founded art collective known internationally for immersive, technology-driven installations — rooms of drifting digital flowers, mirrored infinity spaces, projected water and light that respond to visitors moving through them. Biovortex Kyoto is their third permanent museum in Japan, after teamLab Borderless in Tokyo and teamLab Forest in Fukuoka, and at over 10,000 square metres across four floors, it's the biggest of the three. More than 50 works are on show, including pieces making their Japan debut.
Where it is
The museum sits in the Higashikujo area of Minami-ku, an easy 8–10 minute walk from Kyoto Station's Hachijō (south) exit — genuinely convenient, not a day-trip-style detour. That makes it easy to slot in on an arrival or departure day, or as a change of pace between temple visits.
Booking and timing
Entry is timed and ticketed, and popular slots — particularly afternoons, weekends and school holidays — can sell out well in advance. Buy directly through the official teamLab website rather than turning up on spec. Budget at least two hours to see the museum properly; it's easy to spend longer.
